Martina Vecchietti: Pre-K Teacher

Hi, I’m Martina, an Italian mother and full-time early childhood educator passionate about children’s pedagogy, storytelling, and nature. My goal is to positively impact children’s lives through empathy and joy. I hold a Diploma in Pedagogical Sciences and a Bachelor’s in Educational Sciences and Early Childhood Education, with training in Montessori and Reggio Emilia approaches. I have worked with children since I was 17 in various roles, including school assistant and educator. Since joining the Journey community in 2019, I’ve enjoyed fostering a culture of growth and innovation as a leader in preschool and K-2, helping to implement the Reggio Emilia approach alongside supportive administration and colleagues.
Emma Pacheco: Pre-K Teacher

My name is Emma Pacheco, a 19-year-old from Costa Rica with a passion for baking, particularly pasta sauces, and a love for traveling to Italy to connect with family and culture. I revived my mother’s bagel business and graduated from Journey School of Costa Rica in 2022, which sparked my interest in early childhood education. Now in my third year as a preschool assistant, I find joy in witnessing the growth of my students, especially their transition from pre-k to kindergarten. Starting in September, I will study online at UNED for a diploma in early childhood education, with the goal of specializing in special education to positively impact children’s development. Being part of the Journey community for seven years has been incredibly rewarding, fostering both personal and professional growth.
Yovania Nuñez: Pre-K Teacher

My name is Yovania Nunez, a Nicaraguan national, married mother of three, and an active member of Beach Community Church. As a Spanish teacher, I strive to create a safe, loving classroom where my students feel like part of a second family. My passion for working with children began at 16 when I attended boarding school, and I’ve since worked with children at churches in San Jose and at Cepia in Guanacaste. Since joining Journey in 2019, I’ve experienced incredible growth and camaraderie. Journey is more than just a school; it’s a family that embodies mutual support and collaboration, and I am truly grateful to be part of it.
Sofia Castro: Kindergarten Teacher

Hello! I’m Sofía, a passionate educator from Costa Rica with a love for the countryside. I live on a farm with horses, which I believe have a unique ability to connect with humans and bring peace. As a certified equine therapy instructor, I help children and adults through this special bond. I hold a degree in Early Childhood Education and Bilingualism from the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, and have additional certifications in areas like dyslexia. With six years of teaching experience, I’ve seen the joy of watching students grow and learn in a supportive environment. I’m entering my third year at Journey, where I appreciate the strong sense of community and collaboration among students, teachers, families, and administration.
Marisela Lopez: 1st and 2nd Spanish, Science and CRSS Teacher

I am a dedicated Spanish, Social Studies, and Science teacher with 18 years of experience, committed to fostering lifelong learning and inspiring critical thinking in my students. I hold a Bachelor’s in Primary Education from UNED and a Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of San José, along with studies in Dance and Photographic Arts. My passions for cooking, dancing, and jogging enrich my life and teaching. I believe that happiness and humor are vital for effective learning. Carmen Brenes: 1st & 2nd grade ELA Teacher

Hello! I’m Carmen Brenes, 48 years old, originally from San José, and I’ve been enjoying my journey here for the past 10 months. I’m happily married with one wonderful child. Teaching is my true passion, and I love mountain biking, weightlifting, and CrossFit. With 19 years of experience teaching English at the primary level, I hold a master’s degree in Psychopedagogy from the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, which enhances my ability to support diverse learners. This will be my second year at Journey, and I’m grateful to be part of such a warm, compassionate community that prioritizes love, empathy, and generosity. The connections I’ve made with colleagues, students, and their families are incredibly rewarding and inspire me every day.
Yannira Piedra: Spanish Teacher

Hello everyone! My name is Yannira Piedra, and I’m a Spanish and Social Studies teacher for Elementary at Journey School Tamarindo. Originally from San Carlos, Costa Rica, I started teaching in 2010 and have worked with students from first to sixth grade. I love helping students learn new languages and sharing their stories, as teaching enriches my life as well. I hold a Diploma in Bilingual Executive Assistance and both a Bachelor’s and Licentiate degree in Language Teaching. I joined Journey School in January 2023, motivated by the opportunity to work with innovative methods like Project-Based Learning, Conscious Discipline, and Cognia, which have greatly influenced my teaching approach. In my personal life, I enjoy exploring Costa Rica, visiting the beach, and spending time with my pet and family. I believe that the peace we give out reflects back to us, helping maintain balance in life.
Alejandro Godínez: Math Teacher

My name is Alejandro, a 28-year-old Math and Science teacher from Costa Rica with a deep passion for education. I am also a certified Yoga Instructor, which allows me to incorporate mindfulness and meditation into my teaching. I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, and practicing yoga. I believe that our thoughts shape our reality and strive to maintain a positive outlook, sharing this mindset with my students. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Costa Rica and completed a year of coursework towards a Master’s degree in Physics at Bonn University in Germany before returning to Costa Rica in 2020. Since then, I’ve taught Physics, Math, Biology, and Science at both the high school and elementary levels. This is my fourth year at Journey School, which feels like my second home. The supportive community created by teachers, administration, students, and families has profoundly impacted my perspective on education.
Rocie Gamboa: Science Teacher

I am Rocie Gamboa, a 29-year-old science teacher from Costa Rica with a background in Biotechnology Engineering and a postgraduate degree in Teaching. Since 2017, she has taught in various fields, now focusing on elementary science at Journey School, where she has found a supportive and inspiring community. Passionate about fostering curiosity and critical thinking, she embraces an inquiry-based teaching approach that integrates academic and soft skills. Outside the classroom, she enjoys rock climbing, hiking, sudoku, and origami. She believes in leading by example, emphasizing the power of controlling one’s thoughts and actions.
Alejandra Alfaro: Science Teacher

Alejandra Alfaro is a passionate educator from Alajuela with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education with technological environments from the Costa Rica Institute of Technology. She is currently furthering her studies to enhance her teaching skills. Alejandra has several years of experience in education and is dedicated to adapting her methods to meet students’ needs. For the past two years, she has been teaching at Journey School, where she values the collaborative environment and focus on holistic development. Outside the classroom, Alejandra enjoys exploring new recipes as an amateur chef and finds peace in nature with her dog.
Angie Gosnell: Math Teacher

With nearly 20 years of teaching experience, I bring a passion for education and a strong connection with teenagers, understanding their challenges and striving to relate to them. My background includes a degree in Elementary Education from Ottawa University, Montessori Certification for grades 7–12, and a TEFL certification. I’m currently pursuing a second degree and a master’s in Psychology with an emphasis on Mental Health Counseling. I’ve taught a wide range of subjects, including math, science, English, literature, grammar, social studies, and TOEIC. Outside of teaching, I enjoy traveling, reading, baking (especially my renowned chocolate chip cookies), and basketball. I’m eager to contribute to Journey School’s community, collaborate with fellow educators, and help students discover their strengths.
Stephanie Riley: World Studies Teacher

Stephanie is a passionate educator who values fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for lifelong learning in her students. She holds a Master of Teaching from New Orleans University and a B.A. in Global Studies and Holistic Health from California State Monterey Bay. With teaching experience in diverse settings, including China, Istanbul, Thailand, California, New Orleans, and Costa Rica, Stephanie brings a global perspective to her classroom.
Her interests outside of teaching include biking, swimming, painting, learning about indigenous cultures, and connecting with local flora and fauna. She is deeply motivated by the opportunity to positively impact her students’ academic and personal growth. Stephanie is especially drawn to communities that emphasize Social Emotional Learning and Project-Based Learning, as they encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and real-world impact while prioritizing student well-being.

He investigado temas como turismo, democracia y demografía, y participado en cursos sobre migraciones, cambio climático y STEAM.

My name is Juan Gabriel Sojo Quesada, a cheerful and passionate professional in agronomic sciences with a degree in agronomy from EARTH University, specializing in organic production. Since 2018, I have worked with farmers, applying organic agriculture principles and sharing my knowledge through talks and courses for all ages.

Daniela Aburto: Spanish & CCSS Teacher

My name is Daniela Aburto, a 43-year-old Costa Rican Spanish and Social Studies teacher with 15 years of experience. I am passionate about making learning fun and fostering inclusion, justice, and positive discipline in the classroom. I hold a teaching degree in Primary Education from the University of Costa Rica and have taught using MEP, PYP, and MYP programs.
I also have a strong commitment to environmental education, promoting reusable materials in class and leading community projects on waste management during my time at CEPIA. In 2016, I participated in La Cosecha, a conference on multilingual and multicultural education. Outside of teaching, I enjoy relaxing at the beach, spending time with family, and watching sunsets, while sharing my love for Costa Rica.
Alvaro Ruiz: Math Teacher

Hello! My name is Alvaro, and I’m a 29-year-old educator passionate about teaching and learning. I believe in the transformative power of education and strive to inspire my students to reach their full potential. As a math teacher, I love showing students how mathematics helps us understand the world around us.
I hold an English degree from the University of Costa Rica, a degree in Science of Education, and two IB Diplomas in Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations, and CAS: Creativity, Activity, and Service. With four years at Journey School, I deeply value the sense of community and collaboration among staff, students, and parents. Jim Niven: English Teacher

Hi, I’m Jim Niven, an English teacher with over 25 years of experience. I graduated from the University of Minnesota and have taught since 1998. My journey includes time as an educational consultant and exhibit manager at the Imagine Children’s Museum in Washington, USA.
I love sharing my passions for music, board sports, and travel with my students, aiming to make learning fun and inspiring. I’m also a proud dad of five, a grandpa, and a dog lover with seven pups. I was the first teacher at Journey School, founded by my incredible wife, Christa. Watching the school grow and being part of its close-knit community has been one of my greatest joys.
Nancy: Science IB Teacher

Hola, soy Nancy, bióloga, profesora y mamá. Estoy casada con mi esposo desde hace 9 años y tenemos una hija de 3 años, Marina, además de una perrita llamada Mili. Me encanta la naturaleza, especialmente la observación de aves, o “pajarear”. También disfruto del yoga y pasar tiempo con mi familia en la playa o la montaña.

My name is Juan Pablo Sequeira Loría, a 45-year-old Costa Rican living in Playa Blanca de Junquillal, Guanacaste. I enjoy the beach, nature, and sports, especially bodyboarding and basketball. I’m passionate about education and service, particularly for those who need it most, especially young people and children. I have a beautiful family: my wife Gabriela and my children Juan Pablo, Gabriel, and Fabiana.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in English teaching, a master’s in Education, and a diploma in primary education from the University of Costa Rica. With 20 years of teaching experience in universities, schools, and language institutes, I’m now in my third year at the Tamarindo campus. Journey School’s curriculum, philosophy, and student community have helped me grow as an educator, and I’m excited to continue collaborating with the school for many years.
Celeste León: Student Support Services Director

Celeste is a passionate and adventurous individual living in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, with her supportive partner, Yorvin. She loves running, hiking, attending music festivals, and exploring good food. A Muay Thai enthusiast, Celeste even traveled to Thailand for certification. She holds a degree in psychology from the Universidad de Costa Rica, along with a service leadership certification, and is currently finishing her Master’s in Psicopegagogy while pursuing a Dyslexia Certification in Spanish. With over six years of experience in social extension projects related to education and leadership, Celeste is now in her third year at Journey, where she is inspired by the community’s dedication and support. She feels valued for her contributions and the team’s encouragement of her passions.
Tatiana Chavarría: Executive Functioning Coordinator

Tatiana is a mother, wife, psychologist, and educator from Guanacaste, Costa Rica, with a deep passion for education and service. She has worked with various non-profit organizations focusing on education, well-being, and access to services for children in the region. With over ten years of experience in education and motherhood, Tatiana has developed a strong sense of empathy in parenting and supporting diverse learning needs in multicultural environments. She holds degrees in Psychology and Education from the University of Costa Rica, with a specialization in executive functions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and international peace practices. Tatiana has furthered her education through UPEACE, the Beck Institute, and CEAP/NEUROBIK. Excited to join the Journey community, she is part of the Student Support Services Team, aiming to provide solution-focused interventions that equip students with the tools to develop their full potential.
Daniel Cañas: P.E. Teacher and Coach

Daniel Cañas is a passionate physical education teacher, former triathlete, and avid sports enthusiast. He is deeply committed to promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and inspiring his students to do the same. With a degree in Physical Education from UACA and a master’s degree from the University of Rome “Foto Italico,” Daniel has a strong foundation in sports science, kinesiology, and health education. He is also a registered coach in EREPS and certified in CPR/AED. Since 2015, he has worked with students and young athletes, developing fitness programs, coaching sports teams, and organizing events that foster physical activity and community engagement. Daniel is excited to be part of a school community that emphasizes holistic student development, including physical, emotional, and social well-being, and values lifelong learning and individual potential.
Manuel “Manolo” Carazo: Music Teacher

Manuel “Manolo” Carazo is a passionate and charismatic music educator from Costa Rica, known for creating meaningful connections with students and the school community through music. With over 26 years of experience as a multi-instrumentalist, conductor, and educator, he has toured internationally in over 30 countries and spent five years teaching in Europe. He fosters a safe yet challenging learning environment that inspires students to exceed expectations. His past school projects include performances like Stop Crying Your Heart Out (Oasis) by ISBerne 5th graders and 99 Red Balloons (Nena) at the IB Music Concert 2019.
Jesse Epstein: Photography Teacher

With a passion for learning and a deep appreciation for the moment students discover something new, I have spent much of my adult life as a documentary filmmaker and photographer, focusing on topics like education, aging, mental health, and social change. I also enjoy hobbies like woodworking, cycling, crocheting, and watching classic films. I hold a BA in Sociology from Antioch College and an MA in Media Studies and Film from New School University. For 47 years, I’ve taught part-time at the college level, with experience in preschool, an experimental fifth-grade art program, and high school ethics. This is my third year teaching photography and digital citizenship at Journey, where I also serve as a substitute when needed. The Journey community is special to me because of its genuine commitment to values like inclusiveness, empathy, respect, joy, gratitude, and excellence, which I have found to be rare in other schools.
María Jiménez: Art Teacher

I am a passionate educator with a love for both learning and teaching, driven by my students’ curiosity and growth. Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading, hiking, and music. My commitment to education and inspiring others fuels my daily work. I earned my degree in Education with a specialization in Fine Arts from the Central University of Venezuela and have over 20 years of teaching experience. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on educational innovation and effective teaching methods, even founding and directing educational institutions. I’ve been part of the Journey community for several years, which I consider my second home. What I value most about Journey is the strong sense of belonging and collaboration, where mutual support among colleagues, students, and families creates a unique and rewarding environment.
Jen Mora Zuñiga: Fundraising Coordinator

I’m Jen from the United States, married to a native Costa Rican. We have two young children. I hold a degree in business administration and spent ten years working with nonprofits to empower adult language learners. I have a passion for planning, spreadsheets, and attention to detail, with experience in various administrative roles.
I believe in the power of education and am grateful to be part of the Journey community as a staff member, parent, and volunteer. I’ve enjoyed volunteering with the Parent Ambassadors and helping with fundraising and the sports committee. It’s been rewarding to see my son thrive at Journey.

I’m Jaxon, 19 years old, born in Missoula, Montana, and raised in Costa Rica. Growing up in this vibrant country shaped my appreciation for diverse cultures. I attended Journey School, where I watched the school evolve over four years. After graduating, I worked in real estate for a year, gaining valuable business insights.
Now, I’m back at Journey School as part of the leadership team, excited to grow in both business and education. Passionate about fitness, exercise science, and physiology, I’m working towards my personal trainer certification and IFBB Pro card in bodybuilding, while also studying business to contribute more to Journey.
